about

This EP was supposed to be a lo-fi memoir of my listening habits during 1987-1993 — the glory days of “college rock” when the underground was still alternative and alternative was still underground — but my actual tastes were, tragically, not nearly as hip.

I had no idea who Lou Barlow was, I barely registered the existence of Mudhoney. Beat Happening? Half Japanese? Never heard of ‘em. Though I dressed the part (we all did on the west coast), I wasn’t into Grunge. Not until Nevermind came out. Previous to that I (somewhat correctly) thought Grunge was dinosaur music — a Neanderthal throwback to the dumb ‘70s rock music I was trying to escape with Punk (dumb ‘70s rock music of another feather).

The year I graduated (1991) I liked American groups like Pixies and Sonic Youth fine but mostly I was listening to early Brit-Pop bands. Stone Roses wanted to be adored and I was more than happy to oblige. And how much did I love House of Love, Inspiral Carpets, Soup Dragons, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and even EMF? I didn’t even like Shoegaze until it was officially over. When I first heard Ride’s classic Nowhere, I thought it was the most boring album I’d ever heard and My Bloody Valentine was just the title of some lame old slasher flick.

By 1994 I may have fancied myself a Grunge and Shoegaze devotee but in 1989 the most cutting-edge bands I was listening to were The Cult, Midnight Oil and, let’s be honest, Barenaked Ladies. Forget Eric’s Trip, in 1989 BNL were the poster children of the DIY underground in Canada with the success of their "Yellow Tape". And today I don’t really see a band like R.E.M. or The Replacements as being any cooler than BNL. It’s all become “dad rock” hasn’t it? Don’t Nirvana and Nickleback share more in common than just the first two letters of their names?

So, this EP is a lie. It’s a revisionist history of how much of a kool thing I like to think I was at 17. It ignores how I almost missed out on Fugazi by devoting too much attention to MC Hammer and Crash Test Dummies; how I owned the every GNR tape but nothing by MBV. Always a Slowdive late and a Sebadoh short.
