about

This wasn't actually the fourth track on the EP, that was a cover of "Jet Boy, Jet Girl" by Elton Motello. Was vaguely concerned about licencing issues putting it up on BC, so this is a track from around the same time that was on a Christmas compilation, of all things. It was recorded under the name Serpentine Twist when I was briefly going to start a goth band. Thank god in a alcove I abandoned that idea. I remember I sped the tape up when recording the vocals to get that "goth" timber to my voice. The lyric was inspired by the state of disrepair of downtown Nanaimo streets, circa 2001. Half torn-down buildings, boarded up businesses and meth addicts everywhere.

lyrics

I was walking in the city late one night
The sidewalk gleamed harsh bone white
Nothing was alive, not a blade of grass
The pavement cracked, all broken glass

Nothing's built to last
Disposable as culture
When all that's left is trash
We'll all become vultures
Licking our wounds like alley cats
Picking at bones like ghetto rats

Jezebel's leaning on a chain-link fence
Punks throwing dice, trying to look bent
In a vacant lot where the junkies go
Where nothing ever matters, nothing ever grows

Nothing's built to last
Disposable as culture
When all that's left is trash
We'll all become vultures
Licking our wounds like alley cats
Picking at bones like ghetto rats

Scritch, scratch...
