about

This was written about the same ex mentioned in "Sex Is Always Better With Somebody New". We were about four years into our seven year on-again/off-again cycle at this point and my doctor had recently prescribed me Ativan to help me deal with the stress. Anyway, this was a minor hit at the open mic coffee houses when I'd play it acoustic. This (oddly disco-meets-Byrds) recording wasn't on the original EP as I thought my singing was too off-pitch—which is just hilarious to me now as it isn't any worse than the rest.

lyrics

I'm writing a book
On the the minutiae of pain
There's 52 words for lonely
Not including the profane

Now I need me some pills
To straighten me out
I'm so full of loathing
I'm so full of doubt
Like a monk gone astray
Who's no longer devout

And all the songs they sing
On the radio, in the bars
Are about lovers torn asunder
By distance, by the stars
By time and by folly
By destiny and fate
By trial and by karma
But mostly by mistake

I can't find one song
On all the records I own
That don't make me feel used up
Or feel so alone

Now you want me to put
Your picture back in its frame
It's so easy to trap me
I'm so easy to take
Like a moth in the darkness
Drawn into the flame

And all the songs they sing
On the radio, in the bars
Are about lovers torn asunder
By distance, by the stars
By time and by folly
By destiny and fate
By trial and by karma
But mostly by mistake
It's mostly by mistake...
