I've always been pretty soft-footed and unintentionally sneak up behind people, giving them a fright. I had a girlfriend who actually bought me a small bell to wear so she could hear me coming. What seems like it would be a metaphor in the song, is actually literally true—though she was mostly joking, of course.

Anyway, the song was really about the dying winter of our romance when she wouldn't let me touch her. The silly '90s ironic lyric about "sneakers" plays better here than on the "new wave" reworking on "Husk".
