about

I was in a very tumultuous on-again-off-again relationship for seven years. This was written early on in that, and it seems I thought comparing her to "gum stuck to my shoe" would improve the situation. Or I was tired enough already that I didn't care.

Actually, to be honest, being in a shitty relationship had become my shtick and I reveled in it. Not a terribly mature thing to do, but I wasn't a terribly mature guy.

Anyway, this song made her cry at a gig over her own "ones who got away", which probably wasn't my intention.

And my own "one who got away"? She was written about before in the song "Lost Valentine".

lyrics

The ones who got away
We wish were here today
They were smart enough to know
When it was time to go

They could tell you were lacking
And that's what sent them packing
You know that it's true
It would never have worked
They're just too good for you

The ones who left you
Had better things to do
Than wait for you to find
A talent or ambition of some kind

And the ones who stay
You have to send away
You know that it's true
They would have to be flawed
To put up with you

Like gum stuck to my shoe
I can't seem to get rid of you
Maybe I should accept my lot
And be happy with what I got

Because the ones who got away
Will not come back one day
You know that it's true
Once they're out the door
They forget about you

You know that it's true
Once they're out the door
They forget about you
